KABÁT: Czech Metal Veterans Launch Seven-City American Tour
November 7, 2002KABÁT, the Czech Republic's #1 metal band, kick off their first American tour Thursday, Nov. 7 in New York at Brooklyn's Club Warsaw.
Formed in 1984 in the northern Bohemian city of Teplice, KABÁT's early sound could be termed as old-school thrash, which effectively put them on the Czechoslovakian communist government's black list of subversive artists. Having to perform in secret for their first few years, the band finally stabilized their lineup in 1988. Due to a relaxing of governmental policy, the members of KABÁT were able to hold concerts and record their first album, "Ma Ji Motorovou" ("She Has It Motor Powered"),which won them legions of metal-starved fans in their native country.
By 1990, KABÁT had established themselves as Czechoslovakia's premier rock act. When their country peacefully split into two separate nations, they continued to enjoy unprecedented success in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and have a continually-growing fanbase throughout Eastern Europe.
Since then, KABÁT has retained their original lineup of vocalist Josef 'Pepa' Vojtek, guitarists Ota Vána and Tomáš Krulich, bassist Milan Špalek and drummer Hurvajs (Radek Hurcík). Their extensive discography includes 7 studio albums, a live EP and a 2002 "best of" double CD, plus a live DVD and video collection. With album titles such as "Country Full of Dwarfs", "Devil Rode The Goat", "Whores Know It", and "Colorado", the band have continually demonstrated their superb chops as well as a uniquely bent sense of humor. With a sound that can only be described as "Czech Hashish Rock-N-Roll," KABÁT proudly bear their influences of everything from MOTÖRHEAD, ALICE COOPER, METALLICA and AC/DC to LYNYRD SKYNYRD and traditional Czech folk music.
Most pertinent are KABÁT's live performances. With an over-the-top stage show and the energy of a stampede, the band has conquered stages throughout the center of Eastern Europe and has, on their own, sold out some of the largest arenas and stadiums across the Czech Republic's biggest cities.
In the summer of 2000, the band made their debut performance at Chicago's RockFest, a weekend festival featuring the top bands from Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The success of this event has earned them an invitation from the Los Angeles-based global music promoter CSWORLDNET Corp. (www.csworldnet.com) to tour throughout seven American cities.
